What’s happening with your electrics?
Tap the symptom closest to what you’re seeing. We’ll narrow it down with two quick questions and give you a likely diagnosis, a safety verdict, and a price band — in about 30 seconds.
// Note Diagnoses are guidance, not a substitute for inspection. If anything is hot, sparking or smoking — turn the circuit off and call our emergency line: 0117 924 3382.
// Four rules
When to stop and call,
instead of waiting.
The Fault Finder will flag emergencies, but these four rules apply whatever the tool says. Written for homeowners, not engineers — keep them on the fridge.
// 01
If you smell burning — stop and call.
Burning plastic from a socket, fuse board or appliance is never normal. Turn off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and ring our 24/7 line. We hold same-day slots for this exact fault.
// 02
If a breaker won't reset — don't force it.
An RCD or RCBO that refuses to stay on has found a real fault. Repeatedly slamming it back up risks contact damage and, in worst case, fires the circuit live into a fault. Leave it off until we test.
// 03
Water + electricity — isolate first.
Leaks above light fittings, flooded outdoor sockets, ceiling stains around a downlight — all need the circuit isolated before anything else. Don't switch lights or sockets on to “test”.
// 04
Sparks aren't a feature.
A small spark when you plug in is one thing. A spark from a socket face, a fuse board, or a switch is a loose terminal arcing under load. Stop using the circuit and book a fault-find within 24 hours.
